The Short Answer
Drywall repair is the cosmetic fix that has to disappear under paint. We cut clean, install backer, tape, mud, sand, and texture match the original pattern. Done right, you cannot see the patch in raking light. Single hole repairs are quick, water damage rebuilds take longer, and the schedule is in your estimate.

What Affects the Cost
Here is what moves the price up or down on a real drywall repair project.
Patch size (nail hole vs fist hole vs 4x4 sheet section)
Texture difficulty (smooth Level 5 vs heavy knockdown vs hand applied Santa Barbara)
Whether the whole wall needs repaint to blend or just the patch
Single story access vs ceiling work with ladder or scaffold rental
Asbestos or lead paint testing premium for pre 1978 homes
Patch Only vs Wall Repaint vs Whole Room Retexture (Estimate Ranges Only)
| Scope | OC Estimate Range | Days | Result | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patch only (no repaint) | ~$300 to $3,000 | 1 to 2 | Visible patch in raking light | Touch up before a planned paint refresh |
| Patch plus wall repaint | ~$800 to $5,500 | 2 to 3 | Invisible patch, fresh wall | Most homeowners |
| Whole room retexture | ~$1,800 to $10,000 | 3 to 5 | Uniform texture across all walls and ceiling | Texture mismatch or popcorn removal |
Common Questions About Drywall Repair
Real questions from Lake Forest and south Orange County clients.
What Can Go Wrong (and How We Handle It)
The most common complaints homeowners post about drywall repair. Here is how we avoid each one.
Patch shows in raking light, feathering was rushed
Three coat mud with full sanding between coats, feathered 12 to 18 inches past the patch edge. We check the work in raking light before primer.
Texture does not match, looks like a band aid
We hand match the original texture technique. Knockdown, skip trowel, orange peel, and Santa Barbara smooth all in our regular workflow. Sample boards available.
Patch flashes through topcoat with different sheen
Patch gets a dedicated bonding primer before paint. Same brand and sheen for primer and topcoat means no sheen mismatch.
Dust everywhere in the house, no containment
Plastic and ZipWall barriers seal the work area. HEPA air scrubber where appropriate. Daily debris removal so the rest of the house stays clean.
Charged $400 for a 5 minute spackle job
Small holes priced at $250 to $400 with a same day visit. We do not gatekeep small jobs behind high minimums.
Painter did not test pre 1978 popcorn for asbestos before scraping
Asbestos sample testing required on any pre 1978 popcorn or texture removal. We will not scrape without the clear lab result back.
